Learn to Paddle with Dales CC

Learn to Kayak 6-week course ( starting 27th February 2025)

This course is designed to give you the basic skills to allow you to enjoy the fantastic sport of canoeing.

Through the six weeks you will be taught

  • how to get in and out of a kayak
  • various paddling techniques needed to get you where you want to go.
  • and most importantly, to feel confident and safe in a kayak,

At the end of the course you should have sufficient skills to allow you to paddle on slow moving rivers and sheltered open water. There may be an opportunity to continue on to some of the local rivers with the club to improve your skills  further, more details to follow.

  

Outline of the Sessions

The course lasts six weeks and is at the same time each week, you are expected to attend each session and no refunds will be given for missed sessions. The course payment of £60 should be made  by bank transfer to Dales Canoe Club before the first session. Please use your COURSE and your surname as the payment reference.

Each attendee is required:

  • to complete a British Canoeing Paddlesport Consent form - download it here.
  • to agree to the Dales Canoe Club code of conduct and those of the pool. - download 
  • to be able to swim at least 25 meters

The only equipment you need to bring is swimwear, towel, t-shirt or rash vest (optional), and goggles if you need them.

Each session will take place at Starbeck Pool on Thursday nights with the session starting at 8:00 pm in the pool. Please arrive with sufficient time to get changed and be ready for the prompt start of the session. There will usually be someone from the club in the pool’s reception from around 7:45pm.

The first session will start on the pool side at 8pm, with a safety briefing, followed by an introduction to your instructors, and the equipment that you will be using.  This is followed by your first session on the water. This session will finish at 9:00pm

The remaining sessions will start at 8:00pm on the water and will normally finish at 8:30 pm.
